SiS: STUNNING RICH WOOD GRAIN Hubbard Basin 13" Petrified Wood Display Slab!

Regular price $272.00

Ever long for a truly interesting petrified wood slab from Hubbard Basin, Nevada, but struggle to find one you could afford? Here's a truly gorgeous, collector grade, mirror polished and unusually colorful slab from my favorite petrified wood deposit at an every day collector price! The unusual, much darker colors of the agate in this beautiful piece need to be seen in person to be truly appreciated!  It's some of the darkest, and seemingly random color I've seen from this locale and it has lots of swirling fossil wood structure preserved in the partial cross section easily visible in the mirror polished face!  The colors appear to be brush strokes but are actually the growth rings of the original fossil conifer now turned gemstone!  This is particularly glassy, highly polished gemstone even by Hubbard Basin standards.  You should expect the color to be even darker with indoor light as the agate is quite translucent and the more light you put into it the more color you see coming back out (photographed outdoors in natural light).  The wood grain shows nicely in the mirror polished face of this inky colored agate but you'll want good lighting for this one to see it at its best.

Here's an absolutely gorgeous, nearly flawless petrified wood round from one of the most prized petrified wood deposits ever discovered! If you aren't familiar with the Hubbard Basin petrified wood from Nevada, you should be! It's a very colorful variety, though true collectible pieces from this location are not plentiful. This piece has all of the best colors that these coveted specimens are famous for but is really dominated by the coveted blues in many shades. The characteristic blue, white, red, black and gold along with a lot of other colors appear to have been painted into the stone with the single intention of drawing a gasp from the fossil wood collector on sight!

Besides being beautifully colored, it's also perfectly preserved. The flowing wood grain from this round starts at the heart of the tree and forms massive arcs through every region of this highly colorful wood.  Hubbard Basin petrified wood is highly prized among fossil and gemstone collectors because of it's uniquely beautiful blue color and gold, red, etc. inclusions. It's also some of the best agatized wood to be found and is sometimes even translucent.  It's an extremely agatized variety of petrified wood and the color you see will vary with light intensity and direction just like other varieties of agate.  Petrified wood is relatively scarce from this region and true collector pieces are very seldom encountered. The qualities that make a piece valuable are color, completeness, shape and fracture free - this piece has them all and nice open crystal cavities to boot!

This is a medium sized cross section of petrified wood for this location - it is a very nicely sized display piece. Most of the logs in this deposit were larger spruce and other conifers. This round is complete, and nicely sized although most of these specimens were from softer wood species and like their cousins in Cherry Creek (Nevada's other famous deposit) they tended to get "squashed" in the ground forming oblong rounds when cut. This one is a conifer of some variety (probably spruce) and it maintained its shape very well!  A great collector piece.

This stone has been professionally cut and polished on a special lap that produces a flat face and a mirror perfect shine. The polish we achieve really is liquid perfect - a difference in the quality products Sticks-in-Stones has built its reputation on that others can only aspire to!  If our imitators could beat it, they wouldn't need the trash talk!

It measures about 13 1/4" x 9 1/4" wide at the widest point across the polished face.  It's cut about 0.89" thick.  Weight is 5.66 lbs.
