This is an unusually colored petrified wood round from Patagonia, Argentina. It's a wonderful well preserved round with finely detailed structure preserved in this ancient fossil. Every growth ring is easily visible and cell structure stands out in some areas. The log is a bit more stoney and less agatized than some of the others in this same region which results in a less glassy finish but still a beautiful display specimen. The bark is preserved on this log and easily seen under magnification. This is a feature less common in petrified wood specimens than you might think as most logs end up being moved some distance by flooding until they are buried in sediments when they begin to petrify. The trip through the water involves enough bumping and rolling to remove the bark from the vast majority of petrified logs out there but in a few cases the trees were preserve in place and the bark remains, as is the case with this unusually colorful and visually captiving full round cross section. This is a medium sized round that polished fairly well given the lower agate concentration and it makes a lovely show piece!
This is one of the most beautiful, complete petrified wood rounds from one of the most exotic new locations I've seen in quite a while. This very fine grade of petrified wood came from the southern tip of South America in Argentina! It is what remains of an ancient forest that thrived many millions of years ago. This round comes from one of the newest logs we've obtained from that part of the world. We were able to get some of the best logs we've ever seen recently and this round is one of the first we've finished from that acquisition. It's a conifer of some sort, but I can't venture a guess as to which one. If you follow our auctions, you know what a horrible time I have getting photos with lots of light colors to turn out - this round is in that category. It is much more striking in real life than my camera can capture. The cololr is unique and appealing in a non-typical sense. There are wonderful peach and subtle buff tones in the colorful wood with some darker accents separating them. I'm very excited by these new logs and the wonderful, high quality specimens they've produced! Quality like this is hard to find anywhere and this important deposit is capable of producing some true collector grade rounds!
This top quality round is not only 100% there, rind and all, but it has some of the most stunning growth ring detail you'll ever see in petrified wood. If the timeless mystery of this piece isn't enough for you, then I'm certain the simple, natural, gemmy beauty of it will be. The colors are warm and rich and the entire piece is completely preserved in a more moderate grade of agate and other minerals. The agate content is high enough to allow this stone to be polished to a reasonably nice finish but shy of the really glassy look that only the best grades of fossil wood can achieve in our shop. This round is about average in size for the logs I've cut from this forest, but the color is really unmatched. It's a great collector size to fit nicely into most display cabinets.
This round is is a perfect slice taken center the center of a very solid log. It's really a nice piece, but what else would you expect from a business named "Sticks-in-Stones"?! Polished to the highest standards the stone can achieve, we guarantee you'll be pleased to show off this fine specimen in your own collection.
This piece measures about 6 3/8" x 4 1/8" across the mirror polished face and is cut about 0.43" thick. Stands sold separately. Weight is 0.68 lbs.
