If there were one log that I thought really captured the feel of the Navajo sandstone colors of the desert landscape of northern Arizona, it would be this one! The bold color pattern you see in this magnificent natural artwork was preserved in an ancient and massive Araucaria tree trunk that took on the color of the desert southwest. This unique log is dominated by a warm, glowing orange hue that just feels like the desert! It's one of the many colors that can appear in the petrifed wood found in the expansive petrified forests in Arizona. We're all familiar with the spectacular color of the rainbow wood, but the rich orange, peach and rusty veins of color radiating through the growth rings in this gem grade fossil wood are one of the most alluring displays of color you'll ever see in petrified wood. It's hard to believe that a tree was slowly converted into the amazing display of color and gemstone that you see now in the span of about 200 million years!! This beautiful fossil wood is cut from a nice, hard, solid grade of petrified wood that allowed the stone to take a mirror finish. It's a large and functional set of bookends cut from a section of an enormous log. It was collected by a friend of mine on a fee ranch in Arizona near the town of Holbrook. It's some of the most colorful wood I've seen come from this famous petrified forest. This medium sized set has very impressive presence and would look amazing as a mantel piece, on a bookshelf, desk or table!
This petrified wood is from what is arguably the most famous petrified wood deposit around - the great Arizona Petrified Forest! Don't worry, this wood was mined (as it still is today) from a private ranch near Holbrook, AZ, not pirated away from the National Monument. Despite some of the wild claims you see in various eBay auctions, this wood is still quite available and legally for sale at reputable rockshops including the big one just outside the monument. The problem with being famous is the folklore that follows I suppose. The reason this wood is so famous is pretty clearly demonstrated in this gorgeous specimen. Arizona wood (Rainbow Wood as it is sometimes called) is just filled with rich colors, often dominated by red, orange, purple, yellow and black but covering every color in the rainbow! This lovely specimen is a very attractive and unusually patterned variant found only occasionally in a few deep dig sites. It's a very richly colored log that really shows the wood grain and color off better than some of the giant display pieces often will!
