I've always been a fan of the top grade fortification agates that are found in Brazil, but the other natural earth treasure I have always admired from this nation are the massive amethyst geodes mined from a remote mountain. This stone is actually both! There are several varieties of agates found in Brazil, many representing the finest, largest agates found anywhere on the planet. The best grades have sharp, naturally colorful fortification bands that sometimes frame hollow geode centers. Last year in Tucson I found an importer that had brought in a few giant sized, super thick slabs and I couldn't believe how gorgeous the amethyst centers were in these massive show pieces. I purchased every flawless piece he and brought them back to my shop where I reworked the typical dull polish applied before they were exported to produce a mirror finished, collector grade agate that deserves a place in a serious rock collection or even a museum. I couldn't believe the pieces I was able to obtain, and the price wasn't too bad considering the scarcity of the giant agates that it takes to produce a specimen like this.
