This is a very antiquated looking set of petrified wood bookends - which is appropriate since they are several million years old! This is a medium sized set of petrified wood bookends cut from an ancient fossil white ash tree. These stones are crafted into one of the most stunning natural displays of time, science and nature you'll ever see! The wood grain is finely preserved and reveals a crisply defined ring porous hardwood that looks a lot like modern white ash trees. They can be displayed and used in either orientation shown in the photos. The log is particularly contorted (suggesting it may have been from the stump end) and provides a really visually appealing shape for bookends. The wood grain is particularly clear and easy to study under magnification and the growth rings are easily visible to the naked eye. The polish is, of course, fabulous and really brings this ancient fossil gemstone to life! Regardless of the mystery these fossil gems are begging to tell, they're absolutely beautiful and fully functional!! This gorgeous set of bookends is cut from one of my favorite varieties of petrified wood. This fossilized hardwood came from the famed McDermitt, Oregon, digs. It's been fossilized with exceptional growth ring preservation in a rich chocolate brown agate with a sandy cream colored rind and lots of other accent colors. This particular dig has some of the best petrified wood in the entire state and is often some of the best agatized wood. This wood is so well agatized overall that it takes a gorgeous, lustrous polish that only the best grades of petrified wood can achieve. It's a unique combination of "ancient" and "gemmy" that only petrified wood can be! We select only the showiest pieces of petrified wood and other gemstones to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100%25 functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!! This is the only set of bookends we have cut from this location so don't miss this fabulous natural treasure! This is a medium sized set. Each half measures about 5 5/8" tall & 6" wide at the widest spot on the polished face. They're cut about 1 3/4" thick. Weight for this set is 7.66 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for just about any sized book you have up to the typical sized text book or cook books. What better way to accentuate a bookshelf or your mantle than with this unbelievable natural work of art! Good luck!
