Here's an uncommon chance at a complete and very antiquated petrified log section from the ancient caldera at McDermitt, OR. This one appears to be a petrified ring-porous harwood, though getting any further than that is difficult judging by the preservation of the structure under magnification. In the clearest zones it looks a lot like the fossil black ash trees found in this area and odds are pretty good that this is what this one is as well. The exterior may offer more clues to someone with more than my amateur skills. This is a really nice, gem grade specimen of petrified wood from one of the most prized collecting areas on the planet. The rich glossy brown hues resemble finished wood and the exterior texture shows the weathered surface of the log before it began to petrify. By any measure this is a gorgeous fossil log with amazing detail and rich color prepared and shown off the way Sticks in Stones Lapidary does with every piece of petrified wood we offer! It's highly agatized and took a wonderful polish. We don't often have logs this size but the exterior was so interesting we didn't want to cut it further. Good luck! This is a really large petrified log from a very well preserved petrified hardwood tree that was collected from the ancient caldera near McDermitt, Oregon. This particular log was cut as a single, massive display piece to show off all the antiquated beauty in a monolithic, impressive specimen. The exterior is just as it was found in the ground having only been cleaned off with a cut and polished face expertly prepared to reveal all the gemmy wood grain frozen inside! The wood is very highly agatized and took a magnificent polish. It's a perfect example of the classic petrified logs found at this location and prized by collectors all over the world! The cell preservation in this piece is excellent and easily studied with a hand lens (or one of the handheld microscopes sold in our eBay store). The base is cut flat on this one so that it will stand erect as shown in the photo with the heart nicely centered in this breathtakingly beautiful petrified wood display piece! At Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary, we've perfected the process of polishing petrified wood to the point of causing panic amongst our imitators. The techniques are not secret (we even show many of them in the shop tour on our website) but the one detail you can't capture in a picture is dedication to the principal that every piece should receive the same care and attention to detail that the ones that end up in our own collection receive. Hard work and a no compromises attitude in the shop are what provide Sticks-in-Stones collectors one flawless, mirror perfect display specimen after another from our shop. If you haven't seen our lapidary work in person, we invite you to pick up a small piece at auction or from our eBay store just to see what all the fuss is about - we're confident you'll be able to see the difference easily yourself, but we're happy to help walk you through a simple inspection process that will help you sort the real value from the incredible claims of our imitators should you be curious. This impressive fossil treasure took millions of years to produce - it only seems fitting that we'd spend a little extra time to get the finish perfect as well! This log is about 6" x 5 1/4" wide across the polished face and stands about 6 1/4" tall. Weight for this big specimen is 10.9 lbs! A nice, unique naturally wonderful stone collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary. |
