This is a very rare and particularly colorful find from one of Oregon's most famous collecting spots - it's actually a petrified wood log cast and the cell structure and growth structure is still there in a few places to prove it! Most amazing however is the incredible rich color spectrum this petrified wood is preserved in. These stones are mostly green but this one is accented with several shades of red that range from orange to even purple! The colors are quite dark and rich, and 100% natural. The stone itself polished nicely, something not every piece at Hampton Butte will do. The outside edges of the bookends are left rough and natural except for the cut and felted base and book facing edge. As beautiful as they are functional, a true work of natural art!
One of the most uniquely colored petrified wood deposits in the world is near Hampton Butte in Central Oregon. This location is famous for "Oregon Green Wood". We've collected some exceptional "green wood" from collections that originated near this site over the last few years and I've recently prepared some choice ones. This is one of my favorite materials to use in bookends as it is so richly colored and every set is completely different from the last. This wood is actually a cast replacement (in most cases) of the log after it rotted int he ground and the void was filled with other colorful jaspers and agates. In some rare instances the wood petrified (at least partially) and you can make out the cell structure of what are usually large conifers.
The color spectrum is amazing - it covers every shade you'll ever see at Hampton Butte in one set of bookends! We select only the largest and showiest pieces of petrified wood to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100%25 functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!!
This is a nice sized set. Each half measures about 7 1/4" tall & about 5" wide across the polished face. They're cut about 1 3/4" thick. Weight for this set is 8.74 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for novels, text books or just about any sized book you have. What better way to accentuate a bookshelf or your mantle than with this unbelievable natural work of art from eBay's Original Rockshop! Good luck!Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary is happily providing UPS shipping to greatly reduce shipping charges on large rock orders.
