This is a very dramatic rip cut specimen of petrified spruce from Nevada's famed Hubbard Basin petrified forest! The agate in this piece is about as solid as they come and the color is really dark and unusual. This one will show great in any light, but it really comes to life if you can display it with good light to lift out all of the color and wood grain in that glassy, translucent surface. The cut revealed beautiful flowing wood grain preserved in particularly nice agate with rich, dark color transitions that were inspired by a knot that erupts off the side of the log. You can collect for a lifetime and not see a more beautiful or more interesting specimen of petrified wood than this one! The colors in this piece are particularly dark and flame like so you'll want good light to bring out all of the subtle shades in the rip cut wood grain. The external texture is as fascinating as it is ancient - definitely one of the most unique and beautiful Hubbard Basin specimens I've produced in quite a while! This is a large, hefty section of a fossil spruce log that weighs just under 10 lbs. This piece is cut with the wood grain to show a very different color pattern than the other gorgeous Hubbard Basin petrified wood we've recently offered!! The back and sides are rough and natural just as the stone was found in the ground, while the display face is polished to a mirror finish. It stands on the flat cut base without need for a display stand. This choice display piece features all of the best of the Hubbard Basin petrified wood colors in an impressively sized display piece!
This is really an excellent, very high quality fossil specimen from Nevada's Hubbard Basin. The wood found there is some of the most colorful in the world, rivaling the popular Arizona specimens in color variety, but tending more toward blue & gold than red. They are superior to the Arizona specimens in wood grain preservation. This wood grain and color combination is unique in the petrified wood world and is what makes this location one of the most sought after among wood collectors. These pieces have a very high agate content so the specimens always take a fantastic polish that flashes like a mirror in the sunlight!
This piece is high grade, even for Hubbard Basin - it has a really richly colored agate with wispy accents throughout the flowing wood grain! All of these colors stand in sharp contrast to the barren yellow white rind. The agate is translucent enough that the colored mineral regions appear to form plumes that grow deep into this ancient fossil, disappearing down into the glassy surface. It's cut to stand erect and show the ancient wood grain in all of it's natural splendor. It's a lot harder to do this and make it come out right but this one really shows off the wood in grand style!
This stone has been professionally cut and polished on a special lap that produces a flat face and a mirror perfect shine. The polish really is liquid perfect - a difference in the quality products Sticks-in-Stones has built its reputation on! The base is cut flat and then the face is cut at a sloping angle to make for easy display. Our stand-ups are always cut from larger, heavier pieces of petrified wood that can safely be handled and not present any serious risk of breakage.
This is lovely display piece - would look great on a bookshelf or mantle. It stands about 8 1/2" tall and measures about 8 1/2" x 6 3/8" wide across the polished face. It's about 3 1/4" thick at the thickest part of the base. Weight is about 9.54 lbs.
