This is some of the most interesting and most beautiful petrified wood I've come across in years! This is one of our most "wood like" and impressive sets of Petrified Wood bookends and it is easily one of the most stunning natural displays of fossil gemstone you'll see. If you could see the natural treasures I'm surrounded with in the shop every day you'd know what a marvelous thing that is! This particular set is a very high grade of very gemmy agate that has preserved an ancient hardwood tree from the Sweet Home petrified forest in Oregon. The growth structure of the tree is preserved in the most minute detail you can imagine including countless tiny pores and fine rays that suggest this tree was a maple (diffuse porous hardwood). It is an unusual piece cut to present dramatically with beautiful color, fine wood structure details and a magnificent polish. The wood itself is a petrified hardwood tree and the cell structure is still perfectly preserved and easily visible under magnification! Open your eyes to another world of beauty in this stone with a 10X hand lens and you will see that the transformation to a gemstone preserving these fine details borders on miraculous. The polish that this fossil gemstone achieved really is amazing. It doesn't get any better folks! Easily one of the finest sets of petrified wood bookends you're likely to see this year!
This gorgeous set of bookends is cut from one of my favorite varieties of petrified wood. This fossilized hardwood came from the famed Sweet Home, Oregon, petrified forest. This tree was part of a hardwood forest before it was petrified. It's growth structure is similar to modern mapel and with visible pores and exceptional growth ring preservation in a rich gold and black agate with a sandy cream colored rind and lots of other accent colors. This particular dig has some of the best petrified wood in the entire state and is often some of the best agatized wood. It looks porous between some of the growth rings, yet the wood is so well agatized overall that it takes a gorgeous, lustrous polish that only the best grades of petrified wood can achieve. It's a unique combination of "ancient" and "gemmy" unlike any other petrified wood we've cut!
We select only the showiest pieces of petrified wood and other gemstones to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100% functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!! This is the only set of bookends we have cut from this location so don't miss this fabulous natural treasure!
This is a medium small sized set. Each half measures about 5 3/4" tall & 4 1/4" wide at the widest spot on the polished face. They're cut about 1 3/4" thick. Weight for this set is about 5.3 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for smaller sized books like novels, paperbacks and travel books. What better way to accentuate a bookshelf or your mantle than with this unbelievable natural work of art! Good luck!
