You're looking at a partial cross section from an absolutely enormous fossil oak tree that lived millions of years ago in what is now Eastern Oregon. This stunning multi-color oak is one of the most highly prized of all the petrified wood fossils sought out by collectors all over the world. This huge specimen reveals about 1/5th of a full log cross section and features not only beautiful wood grain in colorful, rich agate, but some simply breathtaking, warm colors that really show the rich wood grain now frozen in gemstone! It's one of my favorite pieces this year! Petrified oak this well preserved is among the most desirable of petrified wood fossils for collectors. Even a casual glance at those striking medullary rays and countless growth rings so faithfully preserved in the mirror polished face of this display specimen tells you why! This cut revealed a hollow decay cavity in the center of the log that shows astonishing 3-D relief wood grain and texture in a geode cavity that cannot be fully appreciate from the pictures but is truly fascinating and artful when viewed in person! This is the latest in a series of wonderful petrified wood stand-ups we've worked up in the rockshop this year! It's a gloriously detailed, beautifully colored petrified oak specimen with unbelievable wood structure and cell preservation. The growth structure and other detailed cell features make this one unmistakably an oak tree. The telltale medullary rays are visible in the face and easily seen with the naked eye. The wood grain is bright and crisp in this very gemmy, dark stone, as are the annual growth rings. The mirror polished face is cut across the wood grain to reveal the wood structure while the base is cut flat to stand erect as shown without need for a stand. The back and base are both cut smooth and flat while the sides are rough and natural to show this fossil log just as it was found in the ground. The display face is polished to a mirror finish that is the hallmark of our lapidary shop!

The name "Stinking Water" raises chuckles from most folks, but quickly catches the interest of serious wood collectors around the world. Oregon's Stinking Water Pass has produced what are arguably the finest fossil oak trees ever found anywhere. The incredible preservation of the red and white oak wood combined with the gorgeous golden colors make this one of the most sought after fossil woods. It's very unusual to find a walnut specimen in this deposit, but here's a prime example! This stand-up specimen is classic Stinking Water with the gold, white, brown, tan and black colors and the characteristic wood grain so perfectly preserved. Like most Stinking Water oak petrified wood, this piece is very highly agatized! The high agate content means that this piece has polished up beautifully. It's just amazing how beautiful petrified wood can be and the fine oak specimens found in this remote Eastern Oregon desert location are among the finest in the world.

This piece has fabulous cell structure and "heft". The wood grain is very visible in this piece both in the dark agate inside and the naturally weathered exterior. This is a nice sized specimen from what must have been an absolutely gigantic tree!

This stone has been professionally cut and polished on a special lap that produces a flat face and a mirror perfect shine. The polish really is liquid perfect - a difference in the quality products Sticks-in-Stones has built its reputation on!
