This huge slab is one of the nicest Washington State petrified wood rounds in this size range that we've come across in many years. The log that produced this slab was found near Sunnyside Washington in the Yakima Valley. It's an incredibly solid, virtually complete cross section from a very finely preserved fossil hardwood. Under magnification you can see what appear to be hundreds of tightly packed growth rings from what was already a very old tree before it was petrified. Under the microscope this diffuse porous hardwood specimen most closely resembles modern basswood in my reference books. The logs in this large and scattered petrified forest are Miocene and though to date back between 15 and 20 million years ago! This piece came to us as part of the Beck collection and is an exceptional example of the fine pieces this family has been known for producing for more than half a century! It's a beautiful specimen with great growth rings and finely detailed wood structure under magnification in pleasing, subtle, warm colors. The opal and agate content in this petrified wood is so high that it polishes like porcelain or glass - it's really something that needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. It really is polished to a mirror perfect shine! It was a very slow growing hardwood with very tight growth rings, fine rays and tiny pores preserved in very nice detail under extreme magnification all the way through the specimen! This high end display specimen would look great as natural wall art or put to work as a serving platter or table top. But the polish in this gemmy, glass like specimen says gemstone and collector piece as much as it does fossil!! It's a truly mirror perfect finish that is almost hypnotizing in hand!

This is a really gemmy larger-sized round cut from the center of a well preserved petrified log that came from the Yakima Valley in Washington. Washington has a few nice petrified wood deposits, the most well known of which is Saddle Mountain. The Saddle Mountain wood is sort of a cross between what you'll find on the McDonald Ranch and McDermitt here in Oregon. Many of the specimens recovered there have a really high opal content like the McDonald Ranch wood does. The Yakima Valley logs share color characteristics with other Central Washington petrified wood including Saddle Mtn. but this area has more petrified hardwoods while Saddle Mtn. is largely conifers.
The wood in this area is very hard and takes a very nice polish when properly prepared. The rings, rays and pores are really well preserved and lend themselves well to study under magnification. With a hand lens you can make out the hardwood cell structure pretty easily. It's particularly nice agate and the polish shows off the natural gemmy beauty very nicely!
