BEAUTIFUL 7" Petrified Wood Specimen - FOSSIL MERANTI - Indonesia

Regular price $82.00

If you've been hankering for something different in your petrified wood collection, how about a petrified tropical wood specimen? I was able to acquire a a couple of more choice logs from Indonesia this year and have been working tirelessly to produce the newest set of Sticks-in-Stones originals! I was surprised to see such a fine variety of new wood species. Hoadley covers several modern ones in his book but I can't pin down which it is but it's certainly different from what we find here in the US! The annual ring boundary is a solid row of smaller cells (horizontal rows in the photo). The only thing I can find like this in the modern trees are several in the Meranti family including White Lauan which this one most closely resembles. This lovely wood has a really nice, finely scalloped rind and features our truly unmatched mirror polish! It's an amazing fossil treasure and you can preview it here in our exclusive Sticks-in-Stones zoom view!

A fellow new to petrified wood collecting approached me a couple of years ago and offered to sell me some logs from Indonesia. Always on the lookout for something new I bought a few, but wasn't immediately impressed with the color variety though the speckled appearance of the wood grain looked promising. They sat in the ever growing pile of interesting things to work on someday until this summer when I finally cut some. I was pleased that it polished well but the real treat came when I looked at some of the specimens under magnification! That did it - I was on another quest and this winter I fulfilled it by acquiring several new logs from this region and boy are they turning out some great specimens! The amazing variety of wood grain I saw in various specimens was unlike anything I'd been cutting previously. I'd stumbled into some rare specimens before, but this was the first time I'd seen so many different tropical woods in a relatively small number of logs!

This nice specimen represents a complete, full round cut from the center of a good sized petrified log. The petrified wood from Indonesia is quite different from those I find here in the Pacific Northwest and as my own interests gravitate towards variety in species as much as locations you can imagine how exciting it is to be able to expand my collection in new dimensions! I hope you'll take this chance to do the same and obtain one of these nice collector sized slabs for your own collection! As I learn more about species I'll update my listings but for now the specifics remain a mystery. It takes a fantastic polish which really brings out every detail in the finely patterned cell structure which is easily visible under a hand lens. At first glance, this wood appears to be a typical hardwood, but under magnification the cell structure looks more complicated and unusual. What I can tell you is that it's beautiful and very well prepared so you end up with a world class specimen for your own collection and study!

This round is complete, was sliced from the center of a log, and has some nice natural wood tone colors. The polish is world class - just what you've come to expect when you buy from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary! Don't pay too much for too little - only our shop can deliver the best polish you'll ever see on petrified wood and agates on every piece we sell!

This piece measures 7 1/4" x 5 3/4" across the polished face and is cut about 0.46" thick. Weight is 1.30 lbs. Stands sold separately.

A nice, unique natural wonder collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary!
