STUNNING Black & White 13" TEXAS Petrified Palm Wood Specimen Slab - Palmoxylon - Official Texas State Fossil!

Regular price $238.00

This perfect Texas petrified palm slab is polished to the kind of mirror finish that makes this one of the most prized of all the fossil palms on the planet. Like their cousins from Louisiana, the stone is highly silicified and polishes beautifully. And like their neighbors, Texas named this stone their official state fossil! It is cut from a nicely defined and very solid example of the high contrast black, white and cream colored fossil palms found in Texas. These were some of the first petrified palms to be broadly sought out by petrified wood collectors and decorators for their inherent gemmy beauty and immaculate preservation. They are so well silicified that they tended to be cut thinner, like agate, rather than petrified wood! This slab came to us as part of an estate collection and we've polished it in our shop to create this gorgeous fossil artwork. It is very nicely preserved and polished to a glassy finish! The vascular bundles under magnification are fascinating and not quite like other palms we've recently offered from various parts of Asia, though the species is beyond my qualifications to even attempt to name. The color is bold and inviting in the gemstone that preserved this fossil and it really makes the structure of the trunk stand out in incredible detail, particularly near the rind. And of course you know that we've polished this amazing natural treasure to a truly mirror perfect finish as well! As unusual as it is beautiful! That back (photo on snowy day) is cut smooth and flat but not polished.

This nice specimen represents a complete, full round cut from the center of a good sized petrified palm trunk. The petrified palm wood from the gulf states is quite different from those found in other parts of the world. It's so gemmy that it's often cut into jewelry! It's also so well preserved and so popular among collectors that both Texas and Louisiana adopted petrified palm wood as the official state fossil! I hope you'll take this chance to share in that obsession and obtain one of these nice collector sized slabs for your own collection. This is a unique piece and I won't have any others from this trunk. It takes a fantastic polish which really brings out every detail in the finely patterned cell structure which is easily visible to the naked eye. Palmoxylon (petrified palm) is readily identifiable from the unique spotted wood grain that looks like a bundle of spaghetti cut in cross section. This would make a wonderful start or addition to any petrified wood collection!

This round is complete, was sliced from the center of a log, and is flawless in every way. The polish is world class - just what you've come to expect when you buy from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary! Don't pay too much for too little - only our shop can deliver the best polish you'll ever see on truly museum grade petrified wood and agates on every piece we sell!

This piece measures about 13" x 9 5/8" across the polished face and is cut about 0.29" thick. Weight is 2.42 lbs. Stands sold separately.

A nice, unique natural wonder collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary!
