Without exception the single prettiest and most visually striking Hoodoo slab I've ever had the pleasure of sharing! This is arguably one of the rarest of all the petrified hardwoods found in Oregon! This gorgeous fossilized elm tree slab is from a seldom seen location on the periphery of the famous (and itself hard to comeby) Grassy Mountain site in Eastern Oregon. It is a ring porous hardwood (appears to be an elm in fact) and the structure is more visible than most from this location. This one is even DOUBLE HEARTED!! This round was actually excavated at Hoodoo Creek. Read on to learn more about this wonderful discovery! One of the finest and most highly desired petrified wood specimens anywhere are the colorful Grassy Mountain petrified wood specimens from the Succor Creek area of far Eastern Oregon. This wood is easily the most colorful petrified wood found in Oregon and rivals the brilliant colors of Hubbard Basin in Nevada. Like the Hubbard specimens, this wood is dominated by blue and gold, but it has fewer reds and whites and it's so well agatized that wood cell structure is rarely observed, though the growth things are often plainly visible. The one exception to this was a small hill that represents an eroded river bank from an ancient stream now exposed by erosion at Hoodoo Creek. This location is less than 10 miles away from the bulk of the Grassy Mtn. deposit and it has a few distinct differences from most of the wood at Grassy Mtn. The first is that it's mostly red and yellow (no blues to speak of) and it's also better preserved with more wood structure than most Grassy Mtn. pieces. It tends to be smaller (mostly limbs) and was probably just a downstream location relative to most of the rest of the deposit so relatively small pieces of hardwood limbs ended up there. It's definitely still in situ - the limbs are found still entombed in the sandy alluvial gravels and sands that first buried them. Unfortunately, very little of this wood has been found and less still is available in the market. I snatch up every scrap I see and I still have handled less than 1/2 dozen pieces in the last couple of years! When I came across this little log I had to have it. It produced only a few choice specimens, but this nice round was one of them. If you don't have a Grassy Mountain or Hoodoo Creek round in your collection, this would be a dandy. It is preserved in all the rich, royal colors this location is famous for. Besides being beautifully colored, it's also perfectly preserved. The flowing wood grain from this ancient wood specimen forms perfect arcs through every region of this highly colorful wood. The detail preserved in this piece is much finer than other specimens I've seen from this region. You can bet a piece of this one is staying in my own collection! Grassy Mountain petrified wood is highly prized among fossil and gemstone collectors because of it's uniquely beautiful color. This is a medium-small log cross section of petrified wood. This piece is cut from the center of the log (or limb). If you haven't seen our petrified wood specimens before then you've been missing one of the best treasures found on eBay! We work hard to find the best specimens from the most prized locations and then work with our magic to create a world class specimen for your collection. The piece is quite solid and meant to be handled. A quick squirt of windex will remove fingerprints from the glassy polished surface. This stone has been professionally cut and polished on a special lap that produces a flat face and a mirror perfect shine. The polish really is liquid perfect - a difference in the quality products Sticks-in-Stones has built its reputation on! It measures 5 3/8" wide and is about 0.34" thick. Will happily combine with other purchases to save on shipping charges.
