The beautiful pink stone this bird's wings and tail feathers are carved from is one of the prettiest I've seen!
This is one of the most amazing things we've seen in recent years! This intricately detailed pair of carvings are made completely of natural semi-precious gemstones carved to show every feather of a feeding hummingbird in flight! The base, leaves, petals, head, and bird feathers are all different stone types to achieve the vivid colors. The crystal base the flower is perched on serves as a natural mount for display and in this case is made of a cluster of natural crystals accented with still more gemstones among the carved leaves. I was able to find a carver that, while he charged a bit more, his birds were made of higher end (harder and more expensive) gemstones including sodalite, rhodochrosite and a gorgeous stone that looks to be something like turquoise or amazonite! These primary stones combined with the rest of the gemstone colors make particularly rich, colorful and beautiful birds befitting their natural subjects! The long beak is metal coated in brass and it is actually just sitting in the hole in the flower - you can take it out or arrange it at whatever angle you like as the beak completely supports the flying bird from this lovely mount! This is a substantial carving of impressive craftsmanship that captured the details of this majestic bird accurately. We've figured out how to ship them safely, just open carefully on receipt and enjoy an amazing piece of natural gem art from Peru!
One of the best imports I saw show up in Tucson this year were these really fine bird carvings made from several different stones all combined to produce an incredible work of art! While I take a great deal of pride in being able to offer the finest polished gem specimens on eBay, I cannot carve my initials in a board, let alone come up with something this impressive! I really couldn't believe how detailed these carvings were and the fact that they had been created using a variety of different rocks to produce the color combinations that give the bird real character just left me in awe. I wish I could have met the fellow that did this work, but he's in Peru. The stones used look very different in many cases to the agates and jaspers we have here in the Pacific Northwest. The birds legs are cast in bronze so you can move them a bit if you need to. Even the base the bird is mounted to is a nice stone specimen! These carvings are good quality, hand made sculptures and the raw material is really top notch. It is nicely polished and finished to show off all the talent of the carver as well as the beauty of the stone! This carving is a gorgeous hummingbird in flight with a wide wing span and fanned tail. Not a tiny finger sized rock but a substantial carving on a nice natural crystal base that itself is quite impressive. The wing span is about 4 1/4" wide and the whole thing is about 5 or 6" from base to wing tip (depending on how you orient the bird). Though delicate, the carving weighs 0.50 lbs. and is not prohibitively fragile. I'm confident you'll be as impressed as I was when you see it in person! A nice, unique naturally wonderful stone collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary.
