This is one of the single nicest petrified palm specimens I've ever seen! This slab was part of the Jim Leicht collection and it represnts one of the largest and most colorful of the petrified palms we've ever offered! The stunning color pattern is accented with a beautiful botryoidal drusy geode cavity that looks like the island nation in the Indian Ocean that it was discovered in! Like many of the specimens I've worked from this region, the wood has flecks of gold marcasite revealed in the highly polished surface. That gorgeous combination of color is absolutely unique to the region and simply gorgeous!! We've recently offered palm specimens from Texas, Louisiana, Myanmar and Wyoming, but this is the first truly museum grade specimen from Sumatra that we've had in years! We've updated the polish on this specimen to make sure it lives up to your expectations and ours. I haven't seen good quality palm logs coming out of that country in over a decade so this one really represents a time capsule opportunity at a serious collector piece.
NOTE: This specimen was acquired by Jim Leicht and became part of his amazing collection. The tags on the back were placed there by Jim and I've left them there for posterity and provenance.
This is a truly amazing, beautifully prepared petrified wood specimen that has been cut and prepared with skill. This slab was part of the Jim Leicht estate collection. Jim lived in the foothills of Mt. Hood in Oregon. During his long collecting career he amassed not one but two world class petrified wood collections. His first collection he sold and donated in the late 20th century to focus his passion on spheres. But even his sphere collection filled with petrified wood and his tastes and interests shifted again to the pursuit of world class petrified wood collector pieces. This piece comes from that second collecting effort which itself spanned more than 30 years. I had the good privilege of knowing Jim and we'd trade from time to time for pieces neither of us could live without. This slab is one of the few pieces from that collection to finally make it back into circulation for a new collector to cherish. Jim collected petrified wood from all over the world but, like many, was particularly fond of the gem grade wood found in the Pacific Northwest. I visited Jim's collection a few times over the years and always admired the breadth of his incredible specimens. He was "old school" and much preferred to keep track of other collectors and collections with frequent phone calls, which proved to be an invaluable source of tips and leads not just for him, but for everyone fortunate enough to be on his call list! Those of us who knew him will miss his friendly, passionate view of both the hobby and those who participate in it. The bulk of his collection remains in the hands of another private collector who has asked me to assist with offering a few duplicates to balance the collection. This nice specimen represents a complete, full round cut from the center of a very large sized petrified palm trunk. The petrified wood from Indonesia is quite different from those I find here in the Pacific Northwest and as my own interests gravitate towards variety in species as much as locations you can imagine how exciting it is to be able to expand my collection in new dimensions! If you don't have a good palm from this site in your collection you should really consider this striking masterpiece! It takes a fantastic polish which really brings out every detail in the finely patterned cell structure which is easily visible to the naked eye. Palmoxolon (petrified palm) is readily identifiable from the unique spotted wood grain that looks like a bundle of spaghetti cut in cross section. This would make a wonderful start or addition to any petrified wood collection! This round is complete, was sliced from the center of a log, and features really gorgeous color patterns. The polish is world class - just what you've come to expect when you buy from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary! This piece measures about 15 3/4" x 9 1/2" across the polished face and is roughly 0.60" thick. Weight is 5.02 lbs.
