SiS: BREATHTAKING Large 9lb. Petrified Wood Bookend Set - McDermitt Tanoak!

Regular price $149.00

This big 8.8 lb. set of bookends stand nearly 8 1/4" tall are are one of the larger sets I've recently made from this seldom seen variety of petrified wood.  They are cut from some of the rarest,  most interesting and most beautiful petrified wood I've worked with in months!  This is one of our larger and more impressive sets of Petrified Wood bookends and it is easily one of the most stunning natural displays I've seen in a long time.  If you could see the natural treasures I'm surrounded with in the shop every day you'd know what a marvelous thing that is!  This is a very well preserved, gem grade partial round from one of Oregon's most famous and beautiful petrified wood deposits located within the ancient caldera at McDermitt.    It's a tanoak, which is one of only two oak species that is not ring porous but still shows medullary rays that make it easily recognizable even without a hand lens.  There were only a few of these logs found decades ago near the old mining site at McDermitt but no new material from these deep mine has been unearthed since. This particular set is a pleasing combination of textures and colors.  The darker areas are slightly porous and sparkle with minerals while the light areas are solid agate with some opal near the rind.  The entire stone polished nicely to produce these gorgeous ancient petrified wood bookends in very contemporary colors.

This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a desolate sagebrush desert that spans over 100 square miles on the Oregon/Nevada border near the town of McDermitt. It's a beautiful cross section of an incomplete fossil tanoak trunk with a lovely shape and gorgeous color combination.  The heart is not there though the oak rays are incredibly numerous and easily visible to the naked eye. The cell detail is excellent and the semi-ring porous pore structure is easily visible under magnification.  Tanoak and live oak are very similar but the pore structure helps separate them.  This stone is what remains, millions of years later, of a mature, large tanoak tree trunk.

This gorgeous set of bookends is cut from one of my favorite varieties of petrified wood. This fossilized hardwood came from the famed McDermitt, Oregon, digs.   This particular dig has some of the best petrified wood in the entire state and is often some of the best agatized wood.   This fossil wood is so well agatized that it takes a gorgeous, lustrous polish that only the best grades of petrified wood can achieve.  It's a unique combination of "ancient" and "gemmy" unlike any other petrified wood we've cut!

We select only the showiest pieces of petrified wood and other gemstones to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100%25 functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!! This is the only set of bookends we have cut from this location so don't miss this fabulous natural treasure!

This is a fairly large set. Each half measures about 8 1/4" tall & 4 7/8" wide at the widest spot on the polished face. They're cut about 1 3/4" thick. Weight for this set is 8.8 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for just about any sized book you have including law books, the typical sized text book, reference books or cook books.

What better way to accentuate a bookshelf or your mantle than with this unbelievable natural work of art!
