This beautifully patterned slab comes from Arizona and represents one of the many different color patterns that petrified wood can be found in from several different dig sites in the northern part of the state. This is the same area that produces the fungus invaded logs many collectors admire, but this one is a very clean, nicely shaped and beautifully preserved conifer, likely Araucaria. I've seen a few pieces of this material over the years, but this is one of the largest and few complete rounds we've had. Look closely and you'll spot some beautifully preserved knots in the nicely preserved wood grain of this tree trunk cross section. Most of the wood I've seen in this color habit has been from incomplete logs so a good one from this area is a rare treat indeed! The wood is just as silicified and well polished as the more often seen "Rainbow Wood" that includes the exposure in the Petrified Forest National Park. The deposit covers many square miles of private land outside of the vast park reserve and that's where petrified wood is legally dug for lapidary arts and collectors all over the world. This particular piece represents one of the best and most complete rounds I've had the pleasure of working with from this site. Polished to a mirror finish in our shop, it's ready to be displayed and admired in your own collection!
One of the oldest and best known petrified forests in the United States is in Arizona. What is less known is that the northern part of the state also holds some incredible petrified wood fossils, and this stunning specimen is one of them. We acquired this piece as part of an estate collection years ago and only recently re-worked the stone to bring it to a proper shine. The wood from this region is often a bit softer and doesn't always achieve the same high polish that the highly silicified petrified wood does but this one is an exception to that. It's very solid, very well silicified and beautifully mirror polished. This is a rarely seen variation in the petrified wood world. Something few of us will ever even see in such an incredible specimen!
If you're new to our shop the one thing you should expect is to see an unexpectedly glossy finish on each stone we prepare. This complete round is a wonderful example of our work. It's been cut with a diamond saw and flat lapped on equipment I built myself to produce a mirror perfect polish unmatched by any of our many would-be imitators. The detail captured and revealed through the highly polished surface is just immaculate. It's easily some of the best Utah wood to be found anywhere! The rings are gorgeous, the agate is highly polished and the detail is easier to see in person than the photo suggests. It's a truly special find and we won't likely have a lot more so get a piece for your collection while it's available!
This is a slab from the center of the log and measures about 12 5/8" x 10 1/4" across the polished face and is cut about 0.53" thick. Weight is about 4.78 lbs.
A nice, unique natural wonder collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary!
