This is a very striking and absolutely astonishing, rich shade of dark green petrified wood bookends. The petrified wood that these bookends are cut from is more silicified than a lot of Hampton Butte green petrified wood is, but they still have several porous areas and small cavities revealed in the saw cut and mirror polished face. It's a nice larger sized set that would be practical on a bookshelf or mantle. This exotic fossil wood is cut into a choice set of petrified wood bookends from a fossil log excavated at Hampton Butte, Oregon. The color is unlike anything I've ever seen before, even from a site famous for its brilliant green petrified wood! This is a much darker color that will show the richest hues in good light. The colors are very contemporary and would look fabulous on a mantel or bookshelf. It's a nicely finished, professionally made set of bookends sure to accent any shelf. Only the front face is polished, the rest is rough cut stone including the sides and cut but unpolished back. The base and book contact sides are felted to protect your furniture and books. A gorgeous and absolutely unique set of large petrified wood bookends!
One of the most uniquely colored petrified wood deposits in the world is near Hampton Butte in Central Oregon. This location is famous for "Oregon Green Wood". We've collected some exceptional "green wood" from collections that originated near this site over the last few years and I've recently prepared some choice ones. This is one of my favorite materials to use in bookends as it is so richly colored and every set is completely different from the last. This wood is actually a cast replacement (in most cases) of the log after it rotted in the ground and the void was filled with other colorful jaspers and agates. In some rare instances the wood petrified (at least partially) and you can make out the cell structure of what are usually large conifers.
In this fabulous set the wood grain is delicately and intricately preserved in the upper outside corner regions of each specimen and it's very clearly sycamore! I had never seen sycamore from this location previously and that fact alone makes these bookends pretty special! If you pick up one of the miniature illuminated microscopes from our eBay store it provides plenty of viewing power to see this detail yourself!
We select only the largest and showiest pieces of petrified wood to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100% functional on top of being beautiful! Of course, these agates proudly show the perfect polish that the Sticks-in-Stones rockshop has dedicated itself to. The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!!
This is a nice, larger sized set. Each half measures about 7 1/2" tall and 5" wide across the polished face. They're cut about 1 3/4" thick. Weight for this set is 9.18 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for novels and larger textbooks or cookbooks. What better way to accentuate a bookshelf or your mantle than with this unbelievable natural work of art straight out of our rockshop! Good luck!
