This is one of the most unique and eye catching petrified wood slabs I've ever seen, and considering how I spend my days that is really saying something!! I am at a complete loss to explain the rays that are visible throughout the face of this amazing, extra large petrified wood slab. They seem to correspond loosely to the texture of the rind so may well have been a growth feature of the tree, but when I look at the immaculately preserved wood grain in the lighter colored outer ring I see no sign of large rays under magnification. The wood growth structure is preserved as clearly and crisply as any you will ever see but the identification of this tropic mystery will require more expertise than I have in these often puzzling pieces. In my reference book the structure looks very similar to afrormosia, but several other tropical hardwoods have similar pore structure. To the naked eye this piece is one of the most dramatic Indonesian slabs that I've ever seen. The rays are a pale blue/white agate that form a breathtaking starburst. The slab is a beautiful size for display as wall art (contact me if you need an invisible but strong wall mounting system) or a uniquely beautiful table top. And since we polished it right here at Sticks in Stones Lapidary, it has a much nicer finish than you'll ever find on any of the imported pieces from this region. I bought these slabs over a decade ago in Tucson with the intention of refinishing them because they were so unique and dramatic. It took me this long to fulfill that vision but they are definitely worth the wait!

I don't often get top grade examples of petrified wood from Indonesia and what I do see is usually poorly finished with a dull, imported polish that fails to show it off for the amazing natural treasure that it actually is. This giant sized slab is an exception to both rules. I didn't find it, but I sure wish I had! It's one of the best preserved, extra large sized petrified wood logs I've seen from that part of the world and it deserves a place in your collection as well. The species of wood found in the Indonesian petrified forests tend to be either palm or tropical hardwoods and several different species are found within those vast volcanic deposits.

If you're new to our shop the one thing you should expect is to see an unexpectedly glossy finish on each stone we prepare. This complete round is a wonderful example of the best lapidary work you'll find. It's been cut with a diamond saw and flat lapped on equipment I built myself to produce a mirror perfect polish unmatched by any of our many would-be imitators. The detail captured and revealed through the highly polished surface is just immaculate. It's easily some of the best fossil wood to be found anywhere! The rings are gorgeous, the agate is highly polished and the detail is easier to see in person than the photo suggests. It's a truly special find and we won't likely have a lot more so get a piece for your collection while it's available!

This is a thick slab from the center of the log and measures about 20 3/4" x 18" across the polished face. It is cut about 1.2" thick. Weight is about 29 lbs.

A nice, unique natural wonder collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary!
